Cigarettes was responsible for nearly half of the deaths that occur as a result of several types of cancer in 2011 last year.
According to a study published online in JAMA Internal Medicine as published by AFP.
In the study mentioned that there are 48.5 percent of the nearly 346 thousand deaths from one of 12 different types of cancer that is caused by smoking.
"Continued Progress in reducing cancer mortality, and death from many other serious diseases, will require a more comprehensive tobacco control, including support targeted termination," the report said.
The study found that, of the cases of lung cancer, bronchus, and trachea were studied, about 80 percent are attributed to smoking. Meanwhile, about 77 percent of deaths from cancer of the larynx or voice box also linked to smoking.
But the researchers highlighted the limitations in data collection that they do, including the lack of diversity of race and sample cases of passive smokers or people who are not yet affected by exposure to cigarette smoke.
